Cycling Safety
Did you know there are over 30 miles of private roads in Dunes West! So, it is a great place to ride. Take advantage of our roads and pathways and remember, you will be sharing them with pedestrians, cars and trucks.
Can I ride my bike on a path or sidewalk in our gated community?
Yes, you can, but you must yield the right of way to pedestrians.
Can my car pass a cyclist on the road?
Yes, you can pass a cyclist at a safe operating distance. South Carolina law doesn’t state what
this minimum clearance is, but remember lives are at stake. Some of our main roads in Dunes
West have medians and you should not attempt to pass a cyclist while there is a median to your
left. Likewise, use good judgement when passing in a curve.
Is it okay to harass, taunt or maliciously throw an object at or in the direction of a
cyclist?
Never, please no. You will be in direct violation of the law and if found guilty, fined, imprisoned or
both.
